Where is the coverage?

Eddie was seriously injured when Todd's car struck him. Since Todd did not have insurance, Eddie looked for an insurance company to pay for his injuries. Eddie's wife drove a company car so he submitted a claim to Selective Insurance Company because it insured Serena's vehicle.

Unfortunately for Eddie, while he would have been covered had he been in Serena's car, he still did not have coverage, because he was not covered while he walked.

Quite a perk

The company-provided vehicle is a welcome perk for many employees because it relieves them of the costs of automobile ownership. Unfortunately, this benefit can result in a significant gap in coverage of which the employee may be totally unaware. The employee is only an insured while driving the vehicle provided. Family members are covered only while they are in the vehicle.

Unexpected gaps and a solution

There are several gaps in coverage if the only vehicle a family has is the company car. A major one is uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage. The employee and family members are not covered if they are struck while riding a bike or walking home from school. There is also no coverage when they drive a non-owned vehicle.

Click here for more detailed information on the coverage gaps and also CA 99 10–Drive Other Car Coverage that an employer can add to its policy to fill them.

Helping your customer understand

Employees trusted enough to be issued a company-owned vehicle are valuable assets to the employer and their well-being is important to the employer. Your ability to explain the potential damages the employees may incur because of relying on the corporate commercial auto policy may encourage the employer to purchase CA 99 10.
